Native Prairie Restoration

field trees grass flowers

When I bought my property, the field consisted mainly of smooth broom; a cool season non-native grass. The goal, with future intervention, was to restore it to its native prairie grasses and flowers.

Detailed Plan

Brief Plan

Brief Description of what we did

  1. Further assessment by my property manager/project manager to evaluate the success of the project
  2. This was accomplished by a controlled burn, year one, to allow flowering plants the chance to grow before grass
  3. Second year we burned again after determining a good existing seed bank for Forb diversity
  4. Native Prairie grass were then drilled into the existing seed-bank
  5. A Third prescribed burn is planned
  6. Further assessment by my property manager/project manager to evaluate the success of the project
